  • Group 9 Energy: Airplane Boarding Is a Social Experiment Gone Wrong
Cartoon illustration of a crowd of travelers with suitcases all pushing toward an airport jetway door at once.

Airplane boarding is a masterpiece of unnecessary chaos. An airline has a plane with numbered seats, assigned to named passengers, and somehow the process of putting those passengers into those seats becomes a contact sport with luggage.

It starts with the announcement of pre-boarding, and instantly, forty people who are not pre-boarding anything drift toward the gate like it is a general admission concert. Sociologists call them gate lice. Travelers call them something worse. They are in group nine. Their seat will still be there in twenty minutes. It has their name on it. And yet they hover, because somewhere deep down they believe the plane might leave based on enthusiasm.

Then the groups get called, and the groups make no sense. There are nine of them, plus priority tiers with names like Premier, Prestige, and Members of the Sacred Order of the Overhead Bin. By the time regular humans board, the overhead bins are full of bags belonging to people sitting in row thirty who stuffed their roller bags above row nine and waltzed onward like bin poachers.

The aisle is where cooperation goes to die. One person stops to fold a jacket with the focus of a surgeon. Another attempts to hoist a bag that clearly contains a full set of encyclopedias and possibly a bowling ball. Everyone behind them practices the ancient art of standing perfectly still while quietly losing their minds.

And let us honor the true villain of the skies: the person who boards, sits down, realizes their headphones are in the overhead bin, and swims upstream against the entire boarding process like a salmon with a podcast to catch.

Here is the maddening truth. The plane does not leave faster because you crowded the gate. Your assigned seat cannot be taken. The overhead bin situation is the only real competition, and the airlines created it on purpose by charging for checked bags, turning every cabin into a storage unit arms race.

We could board calmly, like people entering a library. Instead we board like the plane is a lifeboat. That sucks.
