That Will Be a Fee: Paying Money to Get Your Own Money

Cartoon illustration of an ATM vacuuming extra coins from a person's wallet while dispensing only a small stack of cash.

There is a magic trick happening at the ATM, and you are the volunteer. You insert your card to withdraw your own money — money you earned, money you deposited, money with your name on the account — and the machine charges you for the privilege of handing it back.

Not your bank's ATM? That will be a fee from the machine's owner. And a second fee from your own bank, for the offense of using a stranger's machine. Your money gets charged twice to travel forty feet from an account to your hand, a journey shorter than the one it makes when you drop a quarter.

One Leaky Faucet, Nine Trips to the Hardware Store: A Homeowner's Journey

Cartoon illustration of a homeowner under a kitchen sink battling a dripping faucet, surrounded by scattered washers and tools.

It starts with a drip. Not a flood, not a disaster — just a drip, once every few seconds, in the quiet of the night, at exactly the volume of a guilty conscience. The internet says you can fix it yourself in fifteen minutes with a common washer. The internet has never met your faucet.

This Meeting Could Have Been an Email: A Workplace Tragedy in Forty-Seven Minutes

Cartoon illustration of office workers asleep around a conference table during a dull meeting with a blank presentation screen.

It begins, as all tragedies do, with a calendar invitation. No agenda. Twelve attendees. A title like "Sync" or "Touch Base" or the truly chilling "Quick Chat," which has never once been quick. You accept, because declining feels like a career event, and you begin the long walk to the conference room.

Two Spaces, One Car: The Parking Lot Villain Origin Story

Cartoon illustration of one car parked diagonally across two spaces in a crowded parking lot while other drivers circle.

Every parking lot has one. The lot is packed, cars are circling like sharks, hope is fading — and there it is. One car, parked diagonally, sprawled across two spaces like it just fainted there and nobody had the heart to move it.

Let us consider the possibilities with an open mind. Maybe the driver is protecting a very expensive car. Maybe they just had it detailed. Maybe the car has a medical condition that requires extra room. Or maybe, and hear me out, they parked like a dropped garden hose and simply walked away, whistling, into the grocery store of life.

Your Chip Bag Is Half Air and the Snack Companies Are Counting on You Not to Notice

Cartoon illustration of a disappointed shopper peering into a huge puffy chip bag that is mostly air, with only a few chips at the bottom.

There is a special kind of betrayal that only happens in the snack aisle. You pick up a bag of chips that feels like it could feed a small camping trip. It is puffy. It is substantial. It has the confidence of a bag that means business. Then you open it, and the chips are down there at the bottom like they are hiding from you.

Two Companies That Mailed Fake Government Invoices to Businesses Pay 150K and Flee Colorado

Cartoon illustration of a small business owner frowning at an official-looking envelope that is revealed to be junk mail.

Few things are more insulting than a bill you do not actually owe — and Colorado businesses were getting them by the mailbox-full. On September 16, 2026, Attorney General Phil Weiser announced a settlement with Corporate Certificates, LLC and FL UCC Statement Service, LLC, two companies that mailed marketing materials designed to look like official government invoices.

Subprime Auto Lender Credit Acceptance to Pay 694 Million Dollars Over Loans Drivers Could Not Afford

Cartoon illustration of a smug car salesman handing a worried driver a contract that is comically too long.

Credit Acceptance Corporation built a business lending to people other lenders would not touch. A bipartisan coalition of 41 state attorneys general says the company then approved loans it knew — or should have known — the borrowers could not afford. Now it is paying 694 million dollars to make the allegations go away.
